16 July 2006 - update

Hello all you wonderful people!

Just forwarding a quick 'word or two' from Alan (letter follows below), who visited a place (called 'Boondiboogyo .. as in pronunciation) reached by riding for about 4.5 hours by public transport over the nearby mountain range, hairy hairpin bends, etc., 'not looking too much at the edge of the precipice as you traverse the bumpy, pothole-ridden road), which is just a few miles from the Congo Border. I 'held the fort' at home, doing some 'at home ministry' helped by the Christian lady, Evelyn, who works a few hours for us during the week as interpretor, and a young lady of 20 from our church, Beatrice, amongst the muslim ladies in our neighbourhood. As a result of having about 8 ladies to 'tea .. crumpets, savouries, cold drink, and tea .. Alan and I were asked to join a local family at their wedding ceremony last night!

Although tired, Alan, who arrived home at about 6 pm, quickly changed, washed, and we walked through a banana plantation to reach the bride's home .. to much happiness shown by our neighbours, and to much celebration wedding-food (the plates were heaped high with matoke, a type of banana which is steamed above an outside fire, and which is quite tasty, flavoured rice, stewed goat's meat, peanut sauce, vegetables, and a local salad, it would seem, made of lentils and vegetables ..really nice).

God is moving, by His Spirit, over this area, and over the people - to bless and to show His Love, and Redemptive power! The people are poor, but so happy to show friendship and love - and to receive friendship and love! Many consider the presence of a Musungu (white person) as a great priviledge, in their home, at feasts, such as marriages, engagements, etc. We derive much pleasure and enjoyment when visiting the people who are so happy with even the simplest thing.

Unfortunately, it was too dark to take pictures .. but, we will do so next time .. to make up for yesterday's celebration, we send a picture (click here to view) of Stephen, a Ugandan friend of ours, at his 'Introduction Ceremony' which is sort-of the 'equivalent' of Western engagement parties .. (See below Alan's message)..

We appreciate your prayers on our behalf, as well as for the people of Uganda, that God's Love be revealed to them, and become part of their lives!

Blessings & appreciation!

Heather

Alan's letter

God's blessings to you all.

I just returned from a three day trip to village on Congo border...hot, humid, bedbugs, dirt, dust, noise, etc. but those are absolutely, totally irrevelent in view of the wonderful reception received by the thirty pastors who attended seminar.

The people are so hungry for a solid, foundational Word and so appreciative that the sacrfices are easy to make!!! Of interest to you may be the picture of how I got to the village after leaving the bus....the small pickups are the transport for both farmers goods and people! I have seen regularly 23 people in back or a dozen riding on top of bananas, casava (a starchy root staple food) beans, rice, etc.
